What sets us apart?

Proudly recognized as 1 of 24 official chapters of the USTA Foundation’s National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) Network in Southern California, we provide youth players with an academy pathway to grow their game through quality coaching, structured development, and a supportive learning environment, with opportunities to join our Junior Tennis Teams as they progress.

Our club is also home to weekly adult classes and competitive teams that represent us in USTA regional leagues, building a strong, connected tennis community for players of all levels.

Beyond the court, we’re a social club where tennis brings people together. Whether you’re here to train, compete, or simply enjoy the sport, there’s a place for you at HFA TC.

meet our tennis coaches:

Josh E.

Josh grew up in Downey, California, where he attended Gallatin Elementary, Doty Middle School, and Downey High School. He went on to graduate from UC Merced in 2018 with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics.

Josh has been playing tennis for 16 years and coaching for the past 7. Through Home Field Advantage, he coaches tennis, basketball, soccer, baseball, flag football, and volleyball, bringing multi-sport experience to the community he grew up in.

In tennis, Josh completed USTA Grassroots Tennis Education training, served as President of the Tennis Club at UC Merced, and earned a bronze medal at the Cali Cup at Pepperdine during his collegiate career. Since 2019, he has coached at Downey High School, led two junior teams to sectionals, and helped guide a tennis club that received a USTA Service Award for Los Angeles County.

Josh emphasizes strong form and technical mechanics in his coaching, helping athletes build confidence through solid fundamentals. His favorite part of coaching with HFA is forming lasting friendships with players and fellow coaches while strengthening the local sports community.

Fun fact: Josh is 6’2”.

Paula Q.

Paula has been part of Home Field Advantage since 2021, starting as a student coach before becoming a tennis coach. She’s been playing since she was 11 and competed all four years in high school, serving as team captain during her junior and senior years. She now plays in a USTA adult league through HFA and brings strong leadership and communication skills to her coaching. Paula is currently transferring to USC to study political science, with goals of working in public service and expanding access to opportunities for future generations.

Nicolas Velazco

Coach Nicolas began playing tennis in 2014 and started coaching in 2018. A lifelong Downey resident and current employee of the Downey Unified School District, Nick is deeply connected to the local community HFA has created. Alongside his fellow tennis coaches, he played a key role in getting HFA’s Tennis Club up and running, expanding opportunities for players of all ages.

Nicolas is passionate about helping students build mental toughness and find balance both on and off the court, and one of his favorite parts of coaching at HFA is seeing his players grow. In addition to coaching, Nick competes on HFA’s adult teams in regional play and is currently completing his BA in Political Science at CSULB.

Fun fact: he’s also a musician, and he can juggle!
